Planting Poems with
Life
——A Preface to Selected Peoms of Wang
Xuezhong
Written by Yan Yi Translated by Yang Xu
My poet— friend Wang Xuezhong sent
me his selection of poems, which have been selected
by my old friend Shen Shen, and asked me to write a
preface. These poems I have mostly read, and yet I still
put aside my routine to reread them. Shen Shen is a
good person as well as a good poet, who is know as a
charitable person. He has been all his life compiling
and publishing others collections, and one of my collections
on my hometown has been compiled by him. He is well
versed in poetry, especially in its language, which
enables me to understand more about poetry. Therefore,
I would like to understand more about Selected Poems
of Wang Xuezhong compiled by him.
I believe in one of the traditions of Chinese poetry
for several thousand years, that is , expressing one's
thinking (yanzhi), which accounts for my interest in
Wang Xuezhong's poems. I like the spirit of a laborer
living in his lines with his own pride, love, strife
and confidence. Just in this kind of spirit, our Chinese
nation has been covercoming all sorts of hardships for
thousands of years, achieving today's prosperity. A
nation is like a man. The spirit extracted, it only
has a body of flesh. The same thing is true of poetry.
I want to go beyond the norm of a preface to avoid
talking about his specific poems, which are already
in existence, and reader can taste them by themselves.
I would like to say something about Wang Xuezhong, the
poet who is planting poems with his life instead of
writing them with pen and paper in ink. His poems are
the rubbings of his life, from which we can see his
integrity, his suffering, his inflexibility and his
soul. Wang Xuezhong was a worker, a master of the People's
Republic of China, a member of the working class, who
has ever been working hard. But his nation needs to
break through, to rise up and to strengthen, and has
to have some peolpe laid off their work. Hence, he became
out of job, and began to rearfully peddle, making a
living by selling shoes and vegetables on the tricyle.
He can tolerate anything for the development of his
country, but can never tolerate the bribery and coruption
of some officials. Troubles in living and dignity amount
to his poetic emotion, showing concern for his country
and people.
What an intense sense of being the master of his country!
