LO FU'S COLLECTION OF SHORT POEMS
SELECTED BY HIMSELF
LO FU (1928- ), dubbed the "Wizard
of Poetry", one of the founders and editors of
The Epoch Poetry Quarterly, is probably the most widely
read contemporary poet between the two sides of the
Taiwan Strait and in other Chinese language areas.
Named one of the ten major poets, he has won many
important prizes, including the prestigious Dr. Sun
Yat-sen Literary Prize and the Wu San-lien award.
His Death in the Stone-Cell (1964), the appearance
of which immediately invited a controversy of often
heated discussions, won him the name as one of the
most complex and powerful poets in Taiwan, with images
and a language that often, in his own words, "enrage
the gods and makes people aware of their petrified
condition…What we see in the mirror is not the image
of modern men, but their merciless destinies against
which writing poetry is a form of revenge." His
later volumes continue to explore, with finger and
sharper lines, the tensional condition in which he
finds himself and his country condemned to separation
and isolation as he and his country struggle to reclaim
cultural and psychological terrains margionalized
by the intrusion of alien ideologies and internecine
wars. Books of poems: Spiritual River, Death in the
stone-cell, Poems of Beyond, Bankless River, Songs
of a Wizard, Competing Voices of lotuses, Selected
Poems, The Wound of Time, The Wine-brewing Rocks,
Because of Wind, The Dialectics of love, Moonlight
house, Bury me in Snow, Poems of "Hidden Titles"
and The Nirvana of Angels, Books of Critical Prose:
The Poet's Mirror, Selected Essays on Poetry, Echoes
in Solitude, and Margin of Poetry. Several volumes
have been devoted to the study of his poetry, among
them, The Metamorphoses of the "Wizard of Poetry",
Lo Fu and Modern Chinese Poetry, Lo Fu: Critical Biography,
The Wizard of Poetry: Biography of Lo Fu.
Lo Fu's other crowning achievement
is calligraphy. With tireless practice in recent years,
he has grasped the secret of calligraphic expressivess.
He is not only well versed in the Wei-pei style (style
of inscriptions on tablets in the Wei Dynasty) and
the Seal style of the Han Dynasty, but is especially
refined in the running and cursive styles, free-reeling
and relaxing, achieving new heights among his peers,
His calligrahic works have been widely exhibited in
Taipei, Manila, Kulal Lumper, Vancouver and New York.
