　　本刊《当代诗坛》创刊于1987年9月15日。光阴荏苒。今天迎来了自己的19岁生日。过去的19年并不风平浪静，这本刊物经过了太多的磨难。1991年9月，正如诗人洛夫给本刊四周岁生日贺辞中所言：“在这物欲横流、精神生活枯竭，庸俗的次文化取代了精致文化的世代，诗人创办一份诗刊不仅需要虽千万人而吾往矣的勇气，更需要虽九死而不悔的傻劲。”时间又过去了15年，洛夫所说的环境没有改变，我们所处的地位没有改变，他的话没有过时。《当代诗坛》的同仁们，就凭着一股精神力量，一份对诗的执着，对诗的虔诚和尊崇，坚持着自己的事业，完成着自己的使命。我们克服了种种困难，把这本刊物的集稿、编辑、出版、发行工作不断地推向前进。我们团结了中国两岸四地和海外的老、中、青年诗人，尤其是他们中的精英，共同把刊物办得尽可能好一些。我们力图使我们的团结面不断扩大，刊物的质量不断提高。

　　从本期起，北京师范大学珠海分校国际华文文学研究所、台湾亚洲大学文理学院开始协办本刊，并对刊物的开本做出革新，同时，所有中文排印都由繁体字改为简体字。本期“特别推荐”栏目推出了冰心与杰曼两位中外诗人的诗选。“实力方阵”栏目推出了著名台湾诗人、学者简政珍等四位诗人的力作。这里特别提一下青年女诗人屏子的诗。她把注意力较多地投向当代中国的劳动人民，她的《父亲，我们坐在餐桌前等你》以矿难为题材，表现出她的可贵的悲悯情怀。诗中描写遇难矿工的子女等待父亲归来的情景，体现了呐喊之后的冷峻，血泪之后的沉静，取得了震撼人心的艺术效果。关心民瘼，关怀民生，关注人民的命运，本是中国几千年诗歌和五四以来新诗的优秀传统。我们不希望这种传统被颠覆，我们看到这种传统的延续和发扬而感到高兴。本期的“古诗英译”推出北京大学辜正坤教授英译的“元散曲选译”。

　　本刊与“中外现代诗名家集萃”的各个系列有着兄弟般的血缘关系。在明年--- 2007年中国新诗诞生90周年的欢庆日子里，我们将完成上述“集萃”之500部汉英双语诗集的出版工程。在这之后，我们将再接再力，在2007至2017的10年中，再出版500部汉英双语诗集，使这一诗学工程取得更大的成果。我们将拿出1000部汉英双语诗集来奉献给中国新诗诞生100周年的伟大节日！这1000部诗集必将铺成一道中国新诗的辉煌史迹。

FOREWORD

　　Time elapses quickly and imperceptibly. Contemporary Poetry Quarterly, founded in Hong Kong in Sept. 1987, is celebrating its 19th anniversary of birthday today. The past eventful years has brought too much tribulation to the Quarterly. Luo Fu once said in his greetings on the 4th anniversary in Sept. 1991, an era full of desire for material wealth instead of spiritual life, vulgar culture instead of marvelous one, poets are required either to have the courage to go ahead before others, or to have regretless energy to create a poetry periodical.?15 years has passed. There is neither change of the environment, nor change of our situation. Luo Fu words hold true even today. Our colleagues, by force of a kind of inflexible spirit, devout homage to poetry, hold our ground to fulfill the sacred mission of our own. We have overcome tremendous hardship to collect manuscripts, to copy-edit and to publish our Quarterly year after year. We have united the elder, middle-aged and young poets in Chinese Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and overseas. We try to extend our readers widely, from the elite of poetry circle to the common people. We are determined to make our Quarterly better and better.

　　Henceforward, we will cooperate with the International Chinese Literature Research Centre, Beijing Normal University in Zhuhai, the college of Arts and Sciences, Asia University in Taiwan to make some revision on format of the Quarterly, with the complex font of Chinese character changed into the simplified one. pecial Recommendation?of current issue introduces the selected poems of Bingxin and Germain Droogenbroodt, two distinguished poets. trength Matrix?displays selected poems of four poets including Prof. Jian Zhengzhen, a talented poet in Taiwan. Here we would like to say a few words about poems written by a young poetess, Ping Zi. She paid a special attention to our laboring people. Her poem ather, We Are Waiting for You at the Dinner Table? on topic of miner workers?disaster, presents her valuable pitying feelings. The descriptive scene of tragic miner kids waiting for their father shows off a kind of frostiness after a battle cry, calmness after a burst of tears of blood, reaching a tremendous artistic effect. Originally, it is a fine tradition of our modern Chinese poetry ever since the May 4th Movement to care about the common people with regard to their sufferings, daily life and eternal fate. We are pleased to look forward to the further development of our fine poetry tradition, instead of its disturbance and confusion. English Translation of Ancients?presents a selection of anqu? Chinese verse in Yuan dynasty, translated by Prof. Gu Zhengkun in Beijing University.

　　Contemporary Poetry Quarterly and The World Contemporary Poetry Series have a close fraternal relation. In 2007 when we celebrate the 90th anniversary of modern Chinese poetry, we plan to accomplish a grand project to publish 500 books of selected poetry in bilingual presentation of Chinese and English. Then we will make persistent efforts to publish 500 poetry books further during the next 10 years from 2007 to 2017. We will make much more progress to dedicate 1000 books of selected bilingual poetry to the centennial anniversary of modern Chinese poetry. 1000 books of selected poetry are sure to pave a brilliant road for the contemporary Chinese poetry.
